they/them

What would I look like as a chair?

To me, THEY/THEM is a form of self-expression where I connect with my chosen gender of non-binary into a piece of design. Being androgynous and ambiguous has always been part of who I am as a person and I want to create this piece as something that represents those two words

Vision Board

First, I generated a vision board to describe the message I wanted to convey, using words like “androgynous,” “pattern,” and “texture” as the overall theme of this project.

Then I focus on images that I felt the most drawn into and created abstract drawings out of them.

Utilizing the abstract drawings, I then generated a sit-able form out of them. With each drawing moving forward, I focus more on symmetry designs that have some sort of bending curves coming together. result with the final concept of two parts nested together forming hand shapes.

The final concepts then tested in small scales study models with applied geometric formulation, then finalized to a big scale pattern using cardboard. In the final prototype, I utilized metal forming techniques to create the final chair and coated it with enamel satin paint as finishing touches.
